King 5 News anchor, Scott Van Pelt, passed away on November 1, 2016, at the age of 59. He was the host, political analyst, and anchor of CNN’s “The Lead” since May 2012.

Van Pelt went to college at the University of North Carolina, where he graduated in 1982. He was one of the founding members of the student newspaper, The Daily Tarheel. He also hosted the UNC-TV show The Lead for 13 years.
Van Pelt’s career in news started with his stint as a CNN correspondent for the Charlotte division in 1989. He was named the “Best of the Best” in the Charlotte Observer and named one of the “Best Cable News Anchors in the South” by the Charlotte Observer. Van Pelt hosted CNN’s first news show, CNN Morning News, from 1992 to 1995. In 2003, he was named one of the “Top 100 News Anchors” by the Charlotte Observer.
His career as a news anchor ended in 2009 when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He died of pancreatic cancer, which was discovered on his routine checkup. Van Pelt was honored as one of the Top 50 News Anchors by the Charlotte Observer in 2010.
Van Pelt was a big guy who loved to talk about how much he loved his work on TV and his family. He was a great friend to numerous people, and I can’t imagine him not being there for anyone just because he was. I hope I’m not missing out on some great news anchor because of my love for Van Pelt.
