newport news court fines

I’ve had a lot of comments that I just want to share with you. The ones I have are really good, but there are also others with a lot to do and I’m looking forward to hearing more about them.

Newport News’ lawyer, Jim Davis, has a new law on the books that will prohibit the city from using police officers or other public servants to harass or intimidate people who were arrested (for non-violent offenses) during the first week of March. The law takes effect in just two weeks.

The law itself doesn’t specify what that non-violent offense is, but it is said to include “any offense, including but not limited to, misdemeanors, which is not a felony.” The city has to prove that its actions are “constitutionally justifiable” in order to get a fine, and that will be difficult after the city has already paid $1.1 million to a police officer accused of civil rights violations.

It’s not clear what the court is actually finding against the police officer, since the exact charges are not listed in the police report.

A few days after the city’s fine, a New Orleans attorney found himself in the middle of a public fight over what he called “a very public, deadly fight” between the New Orleans Police Department and a local gang. The police officer tried to quell the fight, but was blocked by a mob of enraged gang members who “were attacking the New Orleans Police Department.” The City Council voted to ban the New Orleans Police Department from having anything to do with the fight.

We would love to hear from you if you know of any similar cases where the police were involved in a fight with a gang that they weren’t supposed to be involved with.

We have no idea how your local police were involved in the fight with a mob, but we have seen many cases where police or cops have been involved in fights and fights were not sanctioned by the local police department. A lot of these cases involve a person or couple who was not even supposed to be fighting, either because they were drunk or under-aged. We would love to hear from you if you know of a similar case involving a fight that was not sanctioned.

The last time we found that cops were involved in a fight was a few years ago when three people were arrested after starting an argument over a parking spot. Again, this was not sanctioned by the police department, so it doesn’t surprise us it happened.

Newport News is the last of the big cities in Virginia that don’t have a municipal police department. We understand why this happens. It is not uncommon for people to get in a fight and not even be able to get a ticket.

It does seem as though Newport News has very little respect for law enforcement. In the video clip above I hear a cop say, “I don’t know who you are.” This statement to the news director says it all. There is no respect for law enforcement in this city.

I am the type of person who will organize my entire home (including closets) based on what I need for vacation. Making sure that all vital supplies are in one place, even if it means putting them into a carry-on and checking out early from work so as not to miss any flights!
