The most popular wedding dresses today are going to be of the Victorian style (that means they were made from ivory satin or satin and lace). For this reason, the style of wedding dress is often referred to by the name of the era. The Victorian style started around 1800 and is characterized by large, square-cut hems, large sleeves, and a high neckline for a modern look.
When we are in the Victorian era, we tend to make many of our clothing choices. For example, we might go for a dress that is very high-necked and fitted. Today’s fashion is all about being more comfortable, so we’re often buying dresses and skirts and shorts that are slimming, and for example, dresses that are cut very low are made out of a material that is slimming.
While we have come a long way, there is still a big gap between what we are wearing and what we are really thinking. We tend to think, “I feel like I should wear something dressy,” “I look a little more like a lady,” “I think I would look better with a coat over my dress,” and so on.
The problem is that we can only think in two ways: “I am a lady, I am wearing this coat and I feel good” or “I am a lady, I am wearing this coat, and I feel good.” There is no third way.
