The fact is that most people are used to getting dressed for the day, put on a pair of jeans, maybe a polo shirt and some sneakers, and are then expected to dress for the day. When a friend or family member tells me he or she is going to an Italian restaurant, I tell them what I usually tell someone who is looking to eat at a regular restaurant: go to the Italian restaurant, eat a good meal, and then come home.
The truth is, most restaurants are not as casual as you may think. Take the Italian restaurant, for example. In my experience, this is not the type of place where you’re expected to dress in jeans and a t-shirt. It’s one of those restaurants that has a casual dress code: no jeans, no t-shirts. The dress code doesn’t matter to the guests, but it does to the wait staff, servers, and waitresses.
I’m not going to lie, I have a hard time eating in restaurants that do not have a dress code. I love Italy, so it makes sense that I find it comforting. I love the food, I love the atmosphere, and I love the people. I have no qualms about the dress code, but I do need a little extra protection. I should also mention that I find it difficult to enjoy food in my hotel room without wearing shoes. I would hate to be stuck in a tiny room with no furniture and no way to move around.
