I live on a hilltop in the mountains of northern Tennessee. I’m not particularly fond of winter, but I am absolutely a spring hill Tennessean. The weather in spring is warm, but the winters are much colder than they are in the south. I’ve been able to enjoy all of the year long, but spring always stands out as my favorite time of year.
I remember this being a problem years ago because it was so early in the season. The hills were bare, the grass was short, and the mornings and evenings were a bit chilly. It was a long, hot summer and the nights were brutally cold. A few years ago, my wife and I decided to take up gardening, and we found ourselves facing a similar problem. A few years ago, the summers in Tennessee were brutal.
That problem is solved in spring, when the hills are green and the mornings and evenings are cool. It’s a nice change from summer, when the days are hot and the nights are hot and the mornings and evenings are cold.
The cold in spring can be the perfect excuse for a summer garden.
